Why India’s EV Revolution Needs Stronger Roadside Assistance Infrastructure

As EV adoption grows across personal mobility, fleet operations, and commercial transportation, the need for dependable roadside support will continue to increase. Quick assistance during breakdowns, charging-related support, remote diagnostics, and efficient towing services can significantly improve customer confidence and reduce operational disruptions, writes Vimal Singh SV, Founder & CEO, ReadyAssist.

India’s electric vehicle revolution is accelerating rapidly. Driven by government initiatives, rising environmental awareness, growing consumer acceptance, and continuous advancements in vehicle technology, EV adoption is reshaping the country’s mobility landscape. EV sales crossed 24.5 lakh units in FY26, recording a strong 24.6% year-on-year growth and highlighting the increasing momentum behind electric mobility in India.

What stands out even more is where this growth is coming from. EV adoption is no longer limited to metro cities and Tier 1 markets. Tier 2 cities are also witnessing steady momentum, reflecting the broader expansion of electric mobility across India. Cities such as Nagpur and Bhubaneswar, for instance, recorded 16,935 and 17,984 two-wheeler EV sales respectively in FY26, highlighting how adoption is gradually strengthening beyond major urban centres.

Alongside vehicle adoption, India’s EV ecosystem is also witnessing rapid expansion in charging infrastructure, product innovation, and EV-focused investments. The country’s public EV charging network has now crossed 30,000 charging stations, further supporting the transition toward cleaner mobility. However, as the ecosystem continues to grow, another equally important aspect is gaining relevance: roadside assistance infrastructure.

For electric mobility to scale successfully, customers need more than just access to EVs and charging stations. They also need confidence that support will be available whenever required, ensuring a smooth and reliable ownership experience.

EV Ownership Comes with New Service Requirements

Electric vehicles operate very differently from conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Their performance depends heavily on battery systems, software integration, electronic controls, sensors, and high-voltage architecture.

As a result, the support required during roadside situations is also evolving.

Traditional roadside assistance services are usually designed around jump-starts, minor mechanical repairs, or basic towing support. EVs, however, require specialised handling, technical expertise, and safety-focused service processes.

For example, EV towing often requires flatbed transportation to protect the drivetrain and electrical systems. Similarly, handling high-voltage batteries and electrical components demands trained technicians who understand EV-specific safety procedures and diagnostics. This makes EV-ready roadside assistance a critical part of the overall ownership ecosystem.

Building a Complete EV Ecosystem

India’s EV ecosystem is evolving beyond vehicle sales alone. Customers today are looking at the complete ownership journey, including convenience, reliability, after-sales support, and service accessibility.

As EV adoption grows across personal mobility, fleet operations, and commercial transportation, the need for dependable roadside support will continue to increase. Quick assistance during breakdowns, charging-related support, remote diagnostics, and efficient towing services can significantly improve customer confidence and reduce operational disruptions.

Technology will play a major role in enabling this transformation. Real-time tracking, connected service platforms, predictive diagnostics, and digitally managed assistance networks can help create faster and more efficient roadside response systems for EV users.

This is especially important because EV customers expect seamless mobility experiences supported by modern technology and responsive service ecosystems.

The Rise of EV-Ready Roadside Assistance

The traditional roadside assistance industry was built around conventional vehicles, but the shift toward electric mobility is creating demand for upgraded capabilities and specialised infrastructure.

The industry now requires:

  • Technicians trained specifically for EV systems and safety protocols
  • Flatbed towing solutions suitable for electric vehicles
  • Advanced diagnostic and remote support capabilities
  • Faster service coordination through connected technology platforms
  • Dedicated support systems for EV-related assistance requirements

These capabilities are becoming increasingly valuable not only for individual vehicle owners but also for OEMs, businesses operating EV fleets, and commercial mobility providers. For these stakeholders, reliable roadside assistance directly supports operational continuity, vehicle uptime, customer satisfaction, and overall ownership experience.

As EV adoption continues to rise, roadside assistance providers will play an increasingly important role in supporting the larger mobility ecosystem.

Customer Confidence Will Drive the Next Phase of EV Growth

India has already moved beyond the early adoption stage of electric mobility. Today’s EV buyers are evaluating not only vehicle performance and running costs but also the strength of the support ecosystem surrounding the vehicle.

Reliable roadside assistance helps create trust, convenience, and peace of mind for customers. It reassures users that expert support will be available whenever needed, whether during daily commutes, long-distance travel, or unexpected roadside situations.

As India moves toward a more connected and sustainable mobility future, strengthening roadside assistance infrastructure will become an essential part of enabling large-scale EV adoption.

Because the success of the EV revolution will not be measured only by the number of vehicles sold. It will also be defined by how effectively the overall ecosystem evolves, from charging infrastructure and policy support to service accessibility, after-sales networks, and dependable roadside assistance that together enable customers to adopt EVs with greater confidence every day.
