In a bid to make India cleaner and greener, the Indian Army has procured 113 electric buses for the transportation of troops. With an endurance of 250 kilometers, the 40-seater buses would apparently be deployed in the plains and semi-hilly areas.
Currently, the e-buses are at the trial stage for procurement. This step of the government marks an important moment in the journey of the Indian Armed Forces towards eco-friendly transportation solutions.
Apart from aligning with the global shift towards sustainable practices, this step also highlights India’s dedication to leveraging indigenous capabilities to achieve its net-zero goals.
Meanwhile, 8,583 electric buses were registered across the country. If all goes as anticipated, the number of e-buses will dramatically increase by 2030. The government aims to replace 800000 diesel buses with electric buses.
While India develops standards for swappable electric bus batteries, a common swapping station for all e-buses seems to be the need of the hour. With FAME, National Electric Bus Program, and PM e-Bus Sewa and other initiatives, the number of electric buses in the fleet of State Transportation Undertakings (STUs) has increased; however, the adoption of e-buses in the private sector is still less.
In such crucial times, the step of the Indian Army has set an example for other industries to follow suit.
