Enigma’s electric two-wheeler lineup from the CRINK series to the AMBIER N-8 stands out for its focus on real-world utility, durability, and unmatched value. What truly sets Enigma’s models apart is not just performance on paper, but how seamlessly they integrate into the everyday lives of our users, says Anmol Bohhre, Co-founder and Managing Director, Enigma Automobiles in an interview with EVolution Auto India.
Q: You founded Enigma in 2015, long before the EV boom in India. What inspired you to take this leap into electric mobility?
Anmol Bohhre: Back in 2013–2014, my brother and I were in Delhi and noticed a growing use of e-rickshaws. But what struck us was the poor quality of these vehicles. People were spending nearly INR 1.3 lakh for a rickshaw that didn’t even have basic features like a front brake. Many of these drivers were daily wage earners who were into manual pulled cycle rickshaws and couldn’t afford the petrol or CNG commercial three wheeler and were now more than happy with low quality and dangerous e-rickshaws. That’s what sparked the idea. We wanted to create something that truly added value to their lives, something reliable, efficient, and affordable. In 2015, we co-founded Enigma and launched our first electric rickshaws with a mission to empower last-mile mobility users. However, during the Lok Sabha elections of MP in 2018 the state subsidies were withdrawn, and the option for the financing for e-rickshaws wasn’t available. We realized that if we wanted to make a lasting impact, we had to think bigger. That’s when we shifted focus and began R&D on electric two-wheelers in 2018, leading to our first launch in 2019. It’s always been about building better, more accessible mobility solutions for the people who need them the most.
Q: How has your journey evolved from concept to one of India’s fastest-growing EV startups with 300 percent YoY growth?
Anmol Bohhre: We have built the company ground-up, covering the entire value chain from introducing the product to educating buyers and users through free test rides and product demonstrations. Right from the start, our focus was clear: be profitable and sustainable from day one. As a bootstrapped company launched with just a couple of lakhs from our own pockets, we had no choice but to be lean, frugal, and focused. Without any external investors or VC mentorship, we scaled this business from zero to a 10X growth trajectory purely through relentless hard work, belief in our vision, and deep market understanding. Our journey from concept to becoming one of India’s fastest-growing EV startups with a 300 percent YoY growth has been driven by real-world insights, hands-on execution, and a constant focus on value creation for our customers. Every milestone has been earned, not given and that’s what makes this journey so special.
Q: Enigma’s electric two-wheeler lineup—from the CRINK series to the AMBIER N-8—is known for its utility and performance. What sets these models apart from the competition?
Anmol Bohhre: Enigma’s electric two-wheeler lineup from the CRINK series to the AMBIER N-8 stands out for its focus on real-world utility, durability, and unmatched value. What truly sets our models apart is not just performance on paper, but how seamlessly they integrate into the everyday lives of our users. We’ve always believed that electric vehicles should first and foremost be cost-saving tools efficient, reliable, and built to last. That’s why we’ve engineered our bikes with fewer than ten moving parts, ensuring lower maintenance and a longer life cycle. From day one, we’ve used IP65-rated motors, controllers, and wiring, prioritizing durability and weather resistance, especially in India’s diverse and often challenging conditions.
What makes our product “the best” isn’t just technology, it’s our philosophy. We never aimed for high profit margins; instead, we focused on delivering the best quality at the most competitive price. Our EVs weren’t designed in the confines of metro cities; they were researched, tested, and fine-tuned in India’s suburban and rural landscapes, where the real demand lies. That consumer-first approach is the reason our scooters truly meet the expectations of our core users: reliable, rugged, and affordable electric mobility made for Bharat.
Q: What’s driving your rapid dealer network expansion (100+ dealers in 13 states, with 80+ more planned)?
Anmol Bohhre: Our rapid dealer network expansion currently 100+ dealers across 13 states with 80+ more in the pipeline is driven by three key factors.
First, the cost-to-benefit ratio of our electric vehicles is exceptionally strong. While our products are priced affordably, they deliver performance that rivals or even exceeds higher-end competitors. This value proposition makes it easier for dealers to confidently pitch our products to a wide customer base. Second, although our vehicles are economical, there is no compromise on performance. From robust battery life to high-quality components, our scooters consistently deliver a powerful, reliable riding experience something both consumers and dealers appreciate. Lastly, our after-sales service has become a benchmark in the industry. We ensure quick turnaround times, easy access to spare parts, and responsive support. This dealer- and customer-friendly ecosystem gives new partners the confidence to join our network, fueling our aggressive expansion across India.
Q: You’ve prioritized Tier II and III cities—why did you choose this market segment, and how has it shaped your business strategy? How do you ensure customer support and service quality across such a wide and diverse geography?
Anmol Bohhre: We come from a Tier II town ourselves, so we deeply understand the needs, challenges, and aspirations of this segment. Today, the real India—what we call Bharat—largely resides in Tier II and III cities, and that’s where we saw the biggest opportunity. While most legacy players focus on metro markets, we identified a clear gap in quality electric mobility options for non-urban consumers and decided to build our entire business around serving them. Focusing on these cities has shaped everything—from how we price our products, to how we design them, keeping in mind real-world usage in semi-urban and rural conditions. Our vehicles are not just designed for Tier II and III India—they’re tested and built within it. To ensure consistent customer support and service quality across such a wide geography, we’ve built a strong, reliable dealer network that acts as our extended support arm. Each dealership is equipped and trained to handle post-sales service, spares, and technical queries, ensuring that our customers get the same quality of care no matter where they are.
Q: What role do you see electric two-wheelers playing in India’s push for decarbonization and green mobility goals?
Anmol Bohhre: Electric two-wheelers are poised to play a transformative role in India’s journey toward decarbonization and green mobility. Given that two-wheelers make up nearly 75 percent of all vehicles on Indian roads, transitioning this segment to electric isn’t just an option, it’s a necessity for meaningful environmental impact. Electric two-wheelers offer an immediate, scalable solution to reduce vehicular emissions, especially in densely populated urban and semi-urban areas where pollution levels are high. They’re not only more energy-efficient than internal combustion engines but also far more cost-effective over time making them an ideal choice for daily commuters, small business owners, and delivery partners. Moreover, as India moves toward its ambitious net-zero targets, electric two-wheelers can serve as the gateway to mass adoption of clean mobility. With lower infrastructure requirements compared to four-wheelers and growing support from government incentives and policies, this segment has the potential to democratize green mobility across Bharat from metros to the remotest villages. At Enigma, we see ourselves as a catalyst in this transition offering affordable, durable, and high-performance EVs that empower people while supporting the nation’s sustainability goals.
